Do you ever have days that seem dull, unproductive, almost pointless?
I have a lot of days like that. Today is one of them. Even writing this feels like a meritless chore. On the whole, you could call it a forgettable day.
But the fact is, a lot of the above is not true. Today has been neither unproductive or pointless, and writing this certainly has its own small merits. Today I have decided to challenge some of the narratives I create on days where I don’t have a lot of energy. Because every day is worth appreciating.
In order to appreciate today, I am going to list off some of today’s positives that have gone relatively unnoticed. Passed over because I had already created the narrative that today isn’t a good day.
. I have been having headaches lately, but today has been headache free.
. I enjoyed having a couple of cups of coffee today.
. I exchanged messages with a few good people.
. I went for a nice walk in the agreeable weather.
These are some positives that come to mind. Before they were nearly invisible, but now they stand out as things to be grateful for. As examples that show today wasn’t that bad after all.
It serves as a reminder that we need to appreciate all good things. No matter how insignificant they may seem. Too often we oversee these things because we are allowing negative thoughts or feelings to act as blankets which cover up the positives that are also present at the time. We need to actively pull back that blanket sometimes, so we can see that today is a gift.
I know firsthand the power of gratitude. Remembering to be grateful is one of the things that helps keep me moving forward. However I should spend a lot more time practicing gratitude. Too many times I end up in the rabbit hole of discontent and gloom. Today I snapped out of that negative headspace. And I am proud of it. I am hopeful that I will continue to be able to do that.
I will never get today back. I can’t change what I did or did not do earlier today. I can’t retract the negative thoughts that I had. But as I currently write this, I do so with positivity and gratitude. And when I look back on today, I see how I turned my day around. How I ended up with a memorable day. And it all started with a little gratitude.
Be grateful. Practice being grateful. It helps. Appreciate today.
